Binye is a way of life in Guinea. Binye for one another, the culture, the food, the land, ocean and sky. Duniya Drum & Dance is excited to present an evening length performance giving respect to Guinea and it’s people. Lead by Master drummer Fode Bangoura come immerse yourself in the music and dance of Guinea West Africa.

Drums of Navarone is an 8-piece group specializing in Latin music - with a twist. Listeners can hear Cuban, Brazilian, and African sounds mixed with more familiar sounds from the USA.

CUMAR
An innovative fusion of traditional music and dance from West Africa and Ireland

Cumar (“Confluence” in Irish Gaelic) brings together the complex rhythms and fluid, expressive movement of West Africa with the flowing melodies, percussive footwork, and intricate dance figures of Ireland, in an exuberant celebration of multi-cultural collaboration. The group features an outstanding ensemble of Twin Cities dancers and musicians, ranging from internationally recognized masters to dedicated young artists carrying these traditions into the next generation.

Performance Dates: Jan. 27 and 28 at 7:30PM

Performance Length: Approximately 75 minutes with no intermission.

Location: Southern Theater 1420 S. Washington Ave. Minneapolis

We are excited to share the stage with Twin Cities Ballet and Rhythmically Speaking for an evening of dance that spans the spectrum and has something for everyones dance palette.


Duniya Drum and Dance Ensemble will take audiences on an energetic journey to Guinea West Africa with a vibrant premiere by Guest Artist Naby Bangoura. Twin Cities Ballet debunks ballet's stereotypes of elitism, gender roles, and formality in exciting, creative, and accessible ways. With their signature groove-driven jazz, Rhythmically Speaking will share sneak peek of a new work set to jazz renditions of Radiohead.

After a three year hiatus from our annual performance and workshop "Fakoly" it is time for a REUNION. Fode Bangoura is bringing in his brothers from across the world as well as some of the greatest talent in Guinea drum and dance to celebrate this special moment of community, family and friends coming together again.

The Heart & the heat performance





The Hook & Ladder Theater is proud to present Twin Cities based Duniya Drum & Dance who will be bringing the heart and heat of Guinea West Africa to the Hook! Lead by Powerhouse Master Drummer Fode Bangoura, Duniya brings together an evening of endless energy and stamina from start to finish. Groove to traditional and Afrobeat rhythms from Guinea. Experience the strength of the djembe and become entranced by the beautiful melodies of the balafon. Duniya’s dancers bring the music to life with their dynamic movement and vibrant costumes. Duniya is excited to welcome special guests Siama Matuzungidi (guitar) Omar Abdulkarim (trumpet) Miguel Hurtado (drum set) and Ousmane Camara (balafon) to the stage.

Guests are also invited to join the participating artists in the Mission Room for a post-show meet and greet.

Fode and Sana Bangoura of Duniya reunite with brothers Idrissa and Baba Bangoura to bring you “Denbaya”(family). Along with Guest Artists from Guinea West Africa and Duniya Drum & Dance Company, this is a one night only, once a year opportunity to see visiting world-renowned master drummers and dancers of the African diaspora perform in the Twin Cities. Highlights include high energy dance and acrobatics from Guinea, folkloric dance from Haiti and musical collaboration with local Jazz musicians Miguel Hurtado and Javier Santiago. The artists--several of them with career ties to the prestigious Les Ballet Africains and Les Percussions de Guineé--will light up the stage with their dynamic dance, colorful traditional costumes and explosive drumming.

Brothers Fode and Sana Bangoura partner up to take the audience on a journey from the distant past to present via the music and dance of their native country, Guinea, West Africa. The trip begins with the most traditional music-making --singing to the beat made by ancient, hand-held percussive instruments--and later moves into generations-old music and dance popularized by world-renowned Les Ballet Africains. With the help of local jazz musicians, Miguel Hurtado, Jax Ravel and Javier Santiago, Fode and Sana will bring the audience back to present with their modern arrangements and choreography influenced by their strong foundation in traditional Guinean drum and dance.

Alhassane Bangoura, in partnership with Fode Bangoura, is a fiscal year 2017 recipient of a Cultural Community Partnerships grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
